HOLY CROSS LUTHERAN CHURCH

The Seventh Sunday of Easter

Pastor Warren Prochnow

May 20, 2012

Divine Service 4

The Lord’s Supper is celebrated at this congregation in the confession and glad confidence that, as He says, our Lord gives into our mouths not only bread and wine but His very body and blood to eat and to drink for the forgiveness of sins and to strengthen our union with Him and with one another. Our Lord invites to His table those who trust His words, repent of all sin, and set aside any refusal to forgive and love as He forgives and loves us, that they may show forth His death until He comes. Because those who eat and drink our Lord’s body and blood unworthily do so to their great harm and because Holy Communion is a confession of the faith which is confessed at this altar, any who are not yet instructed, in doubt, or who hold a confession differing from that of this congregation and The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, and yet desire to receive this sacrament, are asked first to speak with the pastor or an usher.

1 John 5:9-13: Because we are “Easter people” who have the promise of everlasting life in Jesus we know that the best is yet to come and we have 86,400 seconds each day to use all that God has entrusted to us—money, time, abilities, relationships and so much more—to make a positive difference in the lives of others as well as ourselves! May God’s Spirit help us to do this well and with joy!

Today, the Sunday School students study the account “Paul Sails for Rome.” As Christ was with Paul and His companions, so He is with me, holding me up, keeping me with Him in the ship of the Church, and casting all my sins into the depths of the sea. Parents could ask, “Who and what did God use to keep Paul safe? How does God keep us safely with Himself?”

Our district has pledged to support the mission work in Guinea through prayers, funding for missionaries and mission projects, and assistance in recruiting and encouraging additional volunteer and career missionaries. We have traditionally lifted up Pentecost Sunday as a celebration of our Guinea Partnership, providing materials for congregrations to use to help congregration members learn more about our missionaries and their work in Guinea

Another request to ask for participation for a Memorial Day party for our community.

Â

Would you be willing to pitch in and have some fun? We have many neighbors near the church building and in the community that we need to meet and build relationships with. I know that this is short notice or spontaneous (depending on how you look at it), but please give some prayer and see how we can meet and get to know more people in our community and build up who we are.

1 John 5:1-8: Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God! This is love for God: to obey His commands. And His commands are not burdensome because in Christ we are the children of God who delight in doing that which pleases God and blesses those around us. The ways in which we use our money, time and abilities demonstrate that we are the redeemed people of God. Good stewards do the right things for the right reasons and strive for excellence in all they do!

“Thank God for His gift of Christian motherhood, because those who have been blessed through it enjoy priceless spiritual treasures and are given the privilege of serving the Lord in His kingdom.” Rev. Mark Gullerud, Redeemer Lutheran Church, Bowdle, South Dakota – A “Life Quote” from Lutherans For Life · www.lutheransforlife.org

The account of “Paul and Silas in Prison” serves as the focus of Sunday School today. Just as God freed Paul and Silas from prison, granting them life out of death, so Christ by His crucifixion and resurrection frees me from the prison of my sins and grants me life eternal. Questions for discussion include “How is this event more that just a story about Paul’s escape from prison?” and “How has God rescued us from the prison of sin?”

1 John 4:1-11: As God’s Easter people we have received such great love from Him, especially through His Son, Jesus, and that moves us to love one another in words and deeds of kindness. At the same time we remember that our acts of love are the proper response to the love that God first showed to us. These acts of love, whether words or actions, demonstrate that God’s love is in us!

“We often address the life issues based on the Fifth Commandment’s prohibition of murder or on the First Article and God’s creation of life. But the Second Article raises the value of my life and the reasons I should value other lives to an incomprehensible level. Mistreat human life and you mistreat something very special to Jesus Christ. He paid for it. Mistreat life and you mistreat Jesus. He owns it.” Rev. Dr. James I. Lamb, executive director of Lutherans For Life – A “Life Quote” from Lutherans For Life · www.lutheransforlife.org

The Sunday School students study the story of “Lydia” today. Just as God worked His miracle beside the river, clothing Lydia with Christ in Baptism, so God works His miracles in pulpits and fonts around the world today, destroying the work of Satan, ripping believers from the jaws of death, washing away sins in water tinged with Jesus’ blood, and clothing believers with His righteousness. Parents could ask, “How did God use water to save Lydia and us? Who does God use to reveal His Word to us today?”

Congratulations! Seth Scheuerman, Michael Harkness, Marshall Faurot, Marsha Holloway, Don Burr will celebrate their birthdays this week.

It is always very wonderful to witness the wonderful community we live in. We are grateful it was shown once again Sunday evening.  An enormous thank you goes out to all that helped in some way, whether it was donating and helping with the auction, setting up, tearing down, baking, cooking, serving, remembering Jill and her family in prayer, or just being there for moral support of Jill.  There are too many to name, but without every single one of you this event wouldn’t have come together. The evening was a tremendous success and the words Thank you are not enough!  EVERYTHING was so greatly appreciated!

“Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth” are key words on our Epistle reading for today. God’s stewards (His redeemed children) see and respond to needs in God-pleasing and people-blessing ways so that other needy people receive the help they need, whether that is spiritual help, financial help, or a special touch or kindness from a Christian brother or sister.

“A mother need never fear children that seem inconvenient or strip her of her ‘freedom.’ Like Jesus, she can welcome a little child (Mark 10:14). And, when a mother grieves because she aborted her child in a moment of fear, she can look to Jesus the Savior who hears her cry of repentance and welcomes her into His waiting and forgiving arms. In Jesus, she is free to love and defend the blessing of life.” Linda D. Bartlett, www.titu2-4life.org – A “Life Quote” from Lutherans For Life · www.lutheransforlife.org

The story of “Paul and Timothy” serves as the focus of Sunday School today. Just as many in Paul’s day thought, we think we must do something to be saved. Yet the answer is always Jesus, Jesus, only Jesus, whose resurrection from the dead sealed our salvation and absolved the world. Questions for discussion include “How are you like Timothy?” and “How are we saved from our sin?”

1 John 3:1-7: This text is so rich in the meaning of God’s love and our response! God has lavished such love on us that we really are the children of God! We are not yet what we will one day be but, by God’s grace and the marvelous working of the Holy Spirit, we are Easter people—people of hope. May that hope equip us Easter people—God’s stewards—to be zealous for the good works that God has prepared in advance for us to do.

“This exemplary devotion to God’s kingdom [by Hannah in 1 Samual 1] draws our attention to a very special purpose of Christian parents—raising children in the Lord. If each succeeding generation of lost and condemned sinners is to learn of their Savior, it is paramount that there be Christian witnesses who testify to others of the saving truths of God.” Rev. Mark Gullerud, Redeemer Lutheran Church, Bowdle, South Dakota – A “Life Quote” from Lutherans For Life · www.lutheransforlife.org

In Sunday School today, students learn the story of “Paul’s First Missionary Journey.” Just as God sent Paul and Barnabas to spread the Gospel, so today He sends pastors to preach the Gospel, baptize, and feed Jesus’ body and blood to His children, against whom the gates of hell cannot prevail. Consider discussing, “Who gave Paul directions on where to travel? What was Paul’s message?”

Sunday April 22nd Holy Cross Lutheran Church has been asked to make desserts for the Jill Tucker Benefit being held at SCHS. There is a signup sheet at the back of the church for 12 desserts that will serve 24 people each.

1 Corinthians 15:1-11: St. Paul (by inspiration of the Holy Spirit) begins this classic resurrection chapter with the assurance that Jesus really did die for our sins and really did rise from death on that first Easter. Peter and the other eye witnesses to the resurrection of Jesus were never the same again. They lived the rest their lives as God’s redeemed people who are freed up for witness and good works. Easter is a powerful reminder that we are also the redeemed people of God who are empowered for lives of good works. The resurrection of Jesus is the power and inspiration for our lives as God’s stewards of all that He has entrusted to us.

“‘Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for Thou art with me.’ … What gives meaning to these words? It is the Easter story of Christ’s resurrection. He lives and walks with me. We know this is no sentimental thought, but an objective truth that God is God, and He uses this verse to comfort His children. Because He lives, we can face tomorrow with confidence.” Rev. Homer Larson, speaker on the Christian Crusaders radio program – A “Life Quote” from Lutherans For Life · www.lutheransforlife.org

“Jesus Dies and Lives Again” serves as the lesson focus for Sunday School this Easter Sunday. Good Friday is both the worst of days, revealing the gravity of our sin and God’s wrath, and the best of days, forever portraying God’s love for us in the crucifixion and resurrection of His Son. Parents could ask, “What makes Good Friday so good? Why is Easter so important for a Christian?”

Philippians 2:5-11: Jesus is our precious Savior. He is also our model to show us what it looks like to be His disciples and live lives of obedience and service. What a joy it will be on the last day to be among those people who joyfully bow at the name of Jesus and confess that He alone is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. May we faithfully sing hosanna to the Son of David, our Savior and Lord!

“How very important for Christian mothers and fathers to raise their children in the Lord, not only that they might gain saving faith, but also that they might use their gifts and talents for service in God’s kingdom and for the glory of His holy name.” Rev. Mark Gullerud, Redeemer Lutheran Church, Bowdle, South Dakota – A “Life Quote” from Lutherans For Life · www.lutheransforlife.org

On this Passion Sunday, the Sunday School lesson studies “Peter Denies Jesus.” Though we, like Peter, deny Jesus and His gifts, Jesus cannot deny us, because we are part of Him, baptized members of His own Body. Instead, He forgives us and welcomes us back. Consider asking, “How does Peter’s denial affect him? In what ways does God forgive us and welcome us back?”

Hebrews 5:1-10: Just as God in Old Testament times called weak and sinful human beings to be priests who called God’s people to be faithful to Him, so He continues to call people like us to be stewards of the mysteries of God so that sinners are encouraged to look to their gracious God for the forgiveness of sins, life and salvation. May we be effective stewards of the good news of salvation in Jesus so that the Holy Spirit can call many more people into the kingdom of God.

“God entered the darkness of a sinful world in the darkness of a womb. Jesus’ body was knit together there—a body necessary to live a holy life on our behalf, a body necessary to bear the ‘yoke and burden’ of the punishment for sin upon a cross, a body necessary to be placed in a tomb and rise again in victory over sin and death. Baptized into this death and resurrection, God declares us holy and joyful victors!” Rev. Dr. James I. The Sunday School lesson today focuses on “Jesus and Zacchaeus.”
Like Zacchaeus, we are among the lost whom the Son of Man seeks and forgives. We are called to forgive those who sin against us, no matter how Zacchaeus-like they may be in their sins. Parents might ask, “How does Jesus seek you? How has God forgiven you?”

Sunday March 18th Bulletin

HOLY CROSS LUTHERAN CHURCH

Fourth Sunday in Lent

Pastor Warren Prochnow

March 18, 2012

Divine Service 1

Ephesians 2:1-10: By God’s grace we have been saved through faith in Jesus. Nothing that we can do makes any difference as far as our salvation is concerned, but what we do as God’s stewards gives evidence that we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do the good works that God has prepared in advance for us to do. May we do this with joy!

“A woman who faces the reality of her abortion is in need of someone else whom God has named. That person is you. It is me. We are friends. Comforters. Encouragers. We are imitators of the Good Shepherd who walks beside the heavy-hearted through a dark valley toward ‘goodness and mercy.’ A mother who mourns the loss of her child needs a Good Shepherd (John 10:1-18).” Linda D. Bartlett, www.titus2-4life.org – A “Life Quote” from Lutherans For Life · www.lutheransforlife.org

“The Widow’s Mite” serves as the focus of the Sunday School lesson for today. Just as the widow gave all she had to God, trusting Him to provide and care for her, so Jesus gave His all for us, who fail to trust in God for all things. Consider discussing, “How was the widow’s offering different from the others? How has God given us His greatest treasure?”

1 Corinthians 1:18-31: The good news of salvation in Christ Jesus is that God has chosen us in Christ to be His stewards, that is, the managers of all that He entrusts to us to use for His glory and the welfare of other people. May God’s Holy Spirit give us the power to be good and godly stewards of all of life and life’s resources.

“What does it say to our neighbor when in our own families we care for our elderly, become foster parents, adopt children, care for the handicapped, or carry through with an unplanned pregnancy? What does it say to our community when in our churches we care and pray for each other, offering families respite care, visit nursing homes, or provide for the needs of pregnant women? It says that we are truly For Life because we are living it.” Diane E. Schroeder, president of Lutherans For Life – A “Life Quote” from Lutherans For Life · www.lutheransforlife.org

Students in Sunday School today explore the story “Jesus Clears the Temple.” Jesus’ cleansing of the temple carries a twofold message for the Jews and for us: first, that the true Lord of the temple was here in the flesh and, second and more important, that Jesus is the true temple, who houses and perfects us, raising our bodies to be like His. Parents could ask, “Why did Jesus clear the temple? How is Jesus our temple?”
